This Makes Me Angry

The hydrogen engines you can’t actually fuel.

Dave O'Callaghan wrote an article about Hydrogen Combustion engines entitled “5 Hydrogen Combustion Engines That Prove EVs Aren't The Future” that is total bullshit. Here is the crap he wrote. carbuzz.com

Let’s start with his assessment of EVs. Dave is not keeping up on current events related to battery charge times and range options available from CATL and other battery manufacturers. We’re talking about batteries that will give you over 480 kms of range on a 10 minute charge and a total range capacity of over 900 kms. With even better batteries with more range and faster charge times in development. insideevs.com

Dave acknowledges that there isn’t ANY hydrogen infrastructure to fuel these engines. But fails to point out that the small number of hydrogen stations in the US are already being shut down. He probably should have called the article “The hydrogen engines you can’t actually fuel.” forbes.com

It would be wonderful if green hydrogen could be produced more cheaply than non-green grey hydrogen. But that might take until the end of the decade to normalize. bnef.com

Deploying the global infrastructure to make hydrogen production and distribution viable and available to consumers will cost trillions and take decades to build. youtube.com

“There are fewer than 3,000 miles of pipelines carrying Hydrogen (H2) in operation in North America and fewer than 5,000 miles in use worldwide. Nearly all of these pipelines are short lines carrying H2 as a commodity to be used in a manufacturing process.” exxonmobilpipeline.com

Proposed European pipelines could reach 28,000 km by 2030 — but only one 30 km stretch is currently being built. ft.com

And the current hydrogen production trend doesn’t come close to what we would need. ft.com

I don’t mean to say we should stop trying. There are many places where hydrogen is viable. cleantechnica.com

And we’re going to need every piece of green tech we can build to save the fucking planet. fortune.com

In the interim, battery electric vehicles are the only viable option for decarbonizing our daily driving over the next 50 years. In the 50 years after that, maybe hydrogen can have its day in the sun (assuming it isn’t too hot to sit in the sun by then). earthobservatory.nasa.gov

Ford Admits Error

Ford rolled back the EV requirements for their dealers. Another way to think about it is that Ford made sure ALL of their dealers can sell EVs. theverge.com

According to Ford CEO Jim Farley, he's a fan of racing as it keeps him connected to the product. He also believes that many Americans could save money by owning an EV. In his view, generic cars are a no-go, and he encourages Americans to opt for smaller, more efficient vehicles. Additionally, Ford has faced significant losses in their attempts to sell sedans. Stellantis Also Admits They Made An Error

Carlos Tavares says his arrogance is to blame for issues they’ve encountered in the U.S. market. “When I am saying we were arrogant, I’m talking about myself, nobody else. I’m talking about the fact that I should have acted immediately, recognizing that the convergence of those three problems was there, and we had to set up a task force to address them,” Tavares said at Stellantis’s investor day. finance.yahoo.com

But that isn’t going to stop them from doubling down on Jeep with new stores, new models, and big ambitions to sell more Jeeps in North America. cnbc.com

And the new cheaper electric Jeep will be a reborn Renegade. insideevs.com

China’s Automotive Expansion

The EU puts some tariffs in place to address Chinese EVs. It likely won’t matter much. Several Chinese OEMs in Europe can circumnavigate the new duties. Also, China isn’t pleased about the news. reuters.com, reuters.com
